After a while,he came back with a package of peanut butter crackers and proudly heldthem out to us. A pilot who asked “Do you know whose this little boyis?”followed him.
“He is mine,” I answered, wondering what Daniel might have done.
“Well,” replied the pilot, “I'vebeen passing out crackers to the kids for almost two hours, and your son is one of the youngest guys I gave them to. He's the only onewho said 'Thank you'. What he did makes me pleased.”

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learningthat are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not thetools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to acarpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, howto discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer tohis questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He alsoworks to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideasabout how the world works.
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half rightor right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditionspermit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under thesame conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changesthe scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes inthe conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important inscience. Albert Einstein, who developed the Theory of Relativity, arrived atthis theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was latertested through investigations, and Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. Ascientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used tomake mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.
